Acidification

Behind every illness we have to look at causes and effects. There are a lot of pathological processes that are caused by an unnatural, unsuitable life style.

One of the processes that often occurs as such a cause is acidification, a process that affects almost everyone, even though many people do not even know about it.

Acidification is the result of our eating habits and of our hurried, stressful life style. It negatively affects us without us noticing it.

Due to overly high acid levels, our internal balance is upset. Our body tries to fight this, it uses all its reserves to bind the acids, but after a time these reserves are depleted.

Acidification then destroys cells of our body, and this produces the symptoms we experience as illness.

So, what is acidification?

ph diagramThe level of acids and alkalis in solutions is measured by the pH value, which can be anywhere between 1 and 14.

The abbreviation pH stands for “power of Hydrogen” and refers to the number of Hydrogen ions (H+) found in a liquid. Every watery solution has a pH value.

A pH value of 7.0 is neutral, a lower one is acidic, and a higher one is alkaline. The lower the pH value, the stronger the acid, e.g. an acid of the value of 5.0 is a stronger than one of the value of 6.0. The optimal level of acidity of the human body is between 7.35 and 7.45 pH.

Even a small difference from these optimal values can have very serious consequences, similarly to changes of our body temperature.

Our cells are used to alkaline chemical levels

It is not very widely known that sea water (where all living cells began) had an alkaline of 8.0 to 8.5 pH value.

Amniotic fluid (the fluid that the fetus is in in the cervix) has a pH value of about 8.5, which is very alkaline.

The urine of breastfed babies is also alkaline.

Why do our bodies get acidic?

Acidification is a typical problem of the modern age and is due to its particular eating habits and life style.

fast foodIt is caused by three factors:

an increased intake of acids: Modern diet contains more acidic food (meat, dairy products, sugar etc.) than the healthy amount, so acid levels in our bodies rise. This leads to an increase of the half-time of roughage accumulating in the body from 14 days to as long as a year.
Fast food (which typically contains a lot of energy with little mineral content) and late night dinners also increase the acid level of the body.

a decreased intake of alkali food: Our diet contains an ever decreasing amount of neutral or alkali food, and acidic rains cause the soil and the vegetables and fruits growing in it lose their mineral content as well. This causes our bodies to lose alkali reserves.

decreased acid secretion: Sweating and heavier breathing experienced during physical work extract a great amount of acids from the body. In modern times a lot of people do not engage in regular physical work due to their life style, and in their bodies the balance of intake and secretion of acid gets upset. This is exacerbated by low intake of fluids and lack of exercise.

The human body produces acids during metabolism such as carbonic acid, acetic acid, uric acid, lactic acid, citric acid, gastric acid etc. Human urine has a pH value of between 4.8 and 7.5. It is an interesting fact that the pH value of coffee and beer is 4.0, that is, these drinks are more acidic than the most acidic urine which our kidneys are still able to secrete.

If the metabolism of the body cells is hampered and slow, organic changes and degenerations can result, and the immune system is also damaged, which appears in the forms of immunological problems (the occurrence of various fungi, candidosis, susceptibility to infections, allergic reactions, tumors).

How do our bodies defend themselves?

Acids first enter the blood. A healthy body is ready to continually neutralize the acids it encounters: the acids are secreted through the kidneys, lungs, the intestines and the skin.

The most important aspect is the speed of the process: are all the acids secreted completely, or do they get stored (e.g. in the uric acid crystals in the case of gout)?

In the first phase the body uses free bases to immediately neutralize acids. If this process is prolonged, the buffer capacity of the blood decreases.

In the second phase the sodium–potassium proportion is upset, whereas in the third phase the non-neutralized acids are deposited are stored in the connective tissue and cartilages.

If the body is unable to neutralize them later either, the temporary storage becomes permanent. Finally, the minerals found in the bones, cartilages and teeth may become necessary in order to neutralize the acids. The bound poisonous materials are deposited in various part of the body.

When the blood’s buffer capacity is depleted, the extra acid is deposited in the connective tissue.

The cells of the connective tissue are more durable and the poisonous materials do not damage them very easily. The loose fibrillar connective tissue (mesenchyma) is one of the most important structural element of the body: it essentially mediates between the blood vessels and the cells of the various organs.

This supporting and transporting tissue weighs 18 kilograms in the body of adults, so it can be considered the biggest organ of the body.  The intake and buffer potential of the connective tissue is very big. Most chronic diseases cause a change in the functioning of the connective tissue, which is where the accumulation of waste products occurs.

The body produces fat in order to bind acids and thus protect organs from damage.

If an increased acid level extracts from the body (primarily from the blood vessels) the basis forming minerals such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, and zinc, these have to be replaced by other connective materials such as cholesterol and fat.

The body uses these to strengthen the walls of the thinning blood vessels.  Cholesterol and fat are deposited on the walls arteries, causing high blood pressure, a high cholesterol level, and a decrease in the flexibility of blood vessels. When acids are removed from the body, and the body is detoxified and supplied with essential nourishment, high blood pressure and high cholesterol decrease to normal levels.

This is a very simple process, and it works.

This detoxification process is responsible for heart attack, cancer and brain hemorrhage as a final phase, preceded by obesity, arthritic pain, rheumatism, heartburn, chronic exhaustion, eczema and a variety of the other symptoms of acidification.

Illnesses caused by acidification

The same causes are found in the case of many other clinical illnesses such as aphtha, allergies, arthritis, arthrosis, cellulitis, osteoporosis, eccema, obesity and conditions related to these such as problems of metabolism, exhaustion, caries, certain disorders of the immune system, reflux, heartburn, muscle ache, early aging, fingernail problems, duodenal ulcer, cancer, strong body odor, blood pressure problems etc.

Various ear, throat and nose illnesses can also be caused by acidification:

increased ear wax production, external otitis, itching, Eustachian catarrh, otosclerosis, impaired hearing, tinnitus, dizziness, Menière’s syndrome, allergy, rhinitis, sneezing, maxillary sinusitis, nasal polyp, nose bleeding, pustulous nose, nose furunculosis, nose itching, dysosmia, tumors, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, cough, sialolithiasis, tartar formation, bad breath, snoring, thrush, fungi, salivary secretion disorders, dry throat, sore throat, hysteric globus, gustatory disorders, pharyngolaryngitis, hoarseness, headache etc.

In the acidified body, parasites (bacteria, viruses, fungi, Candida) proliferate and also start to produce acids which, in turn, they empty as waste products into our body, thereby further increasing the problem. Parasites do not like alkaline environments, but they thrive in acidic environments.

What can we do?

As they said in ancient Rome, “medicus curat, natura sanat” – that is, medics treat, nature cures.   The medical case system, the doctors and medications will not do regular daily exercise, quit smoking and watch our diet instead of us.

Various therapeutic possibilities exist

Diet change

• Eat and drink more food which is alkali and neutral as far as acidity is concerned, such as vegetables, fruits, potatoes, unpasteurized milk, cream, soy products, egg yolks, mineral water,  and medicinal teas. Foods such as wholegrain bread and pasta, butter, grains, green beans and peas.
• Decrease eating and drinking acidic and acid producing food and drink such as meat, sausages, cheese, sweets, pastries and cakes, alcoholic beverages, coffee, black tea, beer, and synthetic honey.

• Change eating habits: Since saliva has an alkaline reaction, it is important to eat slowly, chew properly, and make sure that saliva is mixed with food when we eat; to cut down on fatty foods; not to eat too much or too late in the day; to avoid stress; and to exercise as much as possible.

salata 4Taking alkali food supplements. For many people diet change is not enough, for others avoiding stress is not possible. In such cases food supplements can be taken.

We recommend supplements which use natural substances to supplement missing alkaline intake and bind superfluous acids.

Recent experiments have shown that the restoring of alkali salts has a statistically significant positive effect in treating heartburn, a feeling of repletion, bloating, extremital and arthritic pain, muscle complaints, palpitation, exhaustion, fatigue and itching.

The viscosity of blood has been demonstrated to improve due to lowered fibrinogenic levels, which may be important in preventing cardiac infarction and apoplexy. In acute treatment alkaline infusions and alkaline baths can be used.
It is important to stress that alkaline salts cannot replace natural supplements, since they only affect alkaline balance, so it is important to take them together with natural supplements.

A further recommendation is regular daily exercise, so that no day passes without 40 minutes of continuous exercise of suitable intensity.

Quit smoking today.

Drink alcoholic beverages only on special occasions and in small quantities. The only exception to this is good quality dry red or white wine, of which between 200 and 300 grams a day can be consumed.

Drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of fluids a day in the form of mineral water, clean, filtered tap water, fruit tea or green tea, or freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices. Avoid carbonated drinks with added sugar and synthetic additives, because these contain empty calories and chemicals that strain the liver.
